Volunteer Programs. Volunteer Programs. Every year the Houston Parks and Recreation Department depends on hundreds of volunteers to assist in a variety of programs and activities from coaching youth sports teams to cleanup projects in neighborhood parks. Sign up in one of our volunteer programs to make a difference in the lives of children, communities and park programs. Get involved! We encourage individuals, businesses, youth and adult organizations and corporate sponsors to learn more about our volunteer and adoption programs. Through our family literacy programs, young children are prepared to start school ready. An accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy, and a United Way agency, our trained volunteers provide a variety of free adult reading literacy programs in the Houston area. Annise Parker, Mayor of Houston, Texas. Volunteer with CIS - Communities in Schools Houston is a non-profit dropout prevention program. We work with at-risk students and connect them with available community resources to help kids stay in school. P. A. R. D. The vans are used to transport youth and seniors to nature, sporting, and community events. All supplies are provided. Volunteers are asked to sign a volunteer waiver form and are asked to wear comfortable clothing and bring their own rain boots. The van wash takes place at 6. Wheeler Street, Houston 7. Green Team Green Team volunteers provide landscaping maintenance and improvements, tree planting, park and/or bayou de- littering and help with beautification projects. Community Center Volunteer. Reading Club Volunteer Readers Books and craft supplies will be supplied, and volunteers will have ample time to discuss reading strategies. First-time volunteers receive training on how to read to and interact with the kids. Provides library services to the Houston. The Friends provides support and resources for Houston Public Library programs. Did YOU know that nearly half of the children entering kindergarten lack the early reading. Community Center volunteers aid with field trips, youth Summer and After- school Enrichment Programs and senior activities. Activities range from homework tutoring and computer classes to teen and senior citizen programs. Volunteers must complete an application and successfully pass a background check to participate. Athletic Team Volunteer. Team volunteers serve as coaches, assistant coaches or provide support to youth participating in baseball, basketball, cycling, flag football, golf, soccer, track and field and volleyball. Volunteers must complete an application and successfully pass a background check to participate. Parks Count! Parks Count! Opportunities include on site counting of visitors using a count methodology and direct community interaction through surveying. Volunteers must complete an application and successfully pass a background check to participate. Internship Program. The Houston Parks and Recreation Department provides a professional environment in which undergraduate, graduate and post- graduate students may acquire experience, which relates to their academic course of study. The internship program is open to all students from an accredited college or university who are seeking and actively pursuing a career in the fields of recreation, parks management or other related professions. You are welcome to apply to be an intern at the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. Eagle Scout Projects. The Houston Parks and Recreation Department helped in the coordination of many Eagle Scout community projects. These projects have benefited our green spaces, youth sports programs and our community centers.
